Does the treadmill have a shelf that will hold a Kindle or IPad?

Yes. There is a pocket that is 14 inches wide x 1.2" deep (at the lip/bottom). It is directly on the display screen and the programmed function controls that many do not use. 10 in pads in vertical orientation are 7" wide max. It will allow you to shift to either side if you use any of the buttons there. I never do. All the main controls are outside that area. If you look at the 5th picture down and hover over to zoom, you will see the pocket and the area it covers. It does have a small lip that will hold an IPad, but I purchased the Sourceone "Compact" Reading Rack Book Holder, Treadmills, Rowers, elliptical, stationary Bikes, climbers Etc. With Flat Display and it works just fine. There's a plastic groove that it fits in nicely. The only downside is that it covers the display and some of the treadmill controls. But, there is a little-extended lip below the display screen. I put a video remote control on it when I'm viewing something on the TV screen during the workout. It's not optimal because it covers up a portion of the display screen. A kindle or iPod would cover up about half of the screen.

What are the real "footprint" (in use) dimensions of 2000?

The full treadmill, with track overhang of the back feet, is 80" x 36". The minimum length a mat would need to be to have all four feet on it would be 68" x 36". I do not have a mat, however. Have it sitting directly on a tile floor with no trouble. We do not have ours on a mat. It sits on outdoor carpeting with no padding. We like it just fine that way and feel that padding might be excessive.

Does anyone know the exact dimensions of the shipping carton?

It is huge and heavy. I'd say the dimensions are 4' wide by 4' tall by 7' length and it came in a crate (or at least mine did). It is so heavy. Once put together it's easy to roll around. It won't fit through a standard doorway unless you turn it sideways. We used a dolly to move it to another room. If you are going up or downstairs, get at least three strong men to help. It weighs a lot... and I mean a lot. 18 " D x 33 " W x 83 " L and comes on a big pallet. I could not get it in the house by myself, way too heavy and large, so opened the box outside and moved components in individually. One step in assembly process near the end requires another person for safety. Treadmill bed has to be held up in folded position while pneumatic strut is attached underneath.
